Soup & Solidarity:

Introducing the Soup & Solidarity Discord, Coming May 1, 2025:

In the context of this website, solidarity means “put your money where your mouth is”. The Soup & Solidarity Discord will provide a way to do that. I am creating the Soup and Solidarity Discord to meet three goals:

  1. To free myself from reliance on insurances to provide the income I need to provide services for my therapy participants, including co-pay and deductible grants and pro-bono grants for people without insurance.
  2. To build a community where people with interests in human rights, mental health, and mutual aid that includes educational, social and support groups, a consensus building decision making model, and opportunities for server members to advertise their mutual aid and direct action efforts as well as their own personal small businesses.
  3. To provide grants or income to server members who
  4. To use a minimum of 50% of funds generated by the Discord server (after direct business costs) to directly support mutual aid funds and eventually (under consensus rules) individual mutual aid requests. The other 50% will go toward my first goal of freeing myself from reliance on insurance.

Text: Soup and Solidarity Discord

The Discord is a paid community space in order to meet the following needs:

  1. To provide a regular stream of income that is semi-regular and can be relied on to fund mutual fund efforts and the other goals above.
  2. To provide a deterrent to prevent people with agendas of interfering with the work from joining the Discord. (If they are going to attempt to disrupt us, they will have to pay for the privilege).

Soup & Solidarity Activities:

Examples of Potential Ways to Use the Soup & Solidarity Server:

  • Educational, social, and support groups provided through voice or audio in addition to the text channels. These might include:
    • Peer support groups about various issues.
    • Social groups such as crafting circles, book clubs, gaming hangouts, social reading clubs, tabletop gaming, etc.
    • Planning meetings for various actions.
    • Watch parties.
    • Parties and celebrations of the members of the server and any successes we/they might have.
    • Swap forums and other buy-nothing forums.
    • Advertising mutual aid, direct action, and small businesses led by server members.
    • Regular consensus meetings with rotating leadership (even though I am the creator, I will not always be in the rotation).
    • Places for various marginalized populations to have member-only conversations that they can choose to make observable by other server members or not.
    • Member-only donation auctions.
    • Access to the server’s Etsy store as a seller and a 10% discount as a buyer. (The Etsy store will be filled with items donated by server members, with the donor getting a share of the proceeds and the rest going to the other server goals).

Patreon Tiers for the Soup & Solidarity Server:

Tentatively, there will be three originating tier levels:

  • All non-restricted text channels and social and peer support voice and video channels are available for $1. No opportunities for income.
  • If you wish to advertise actions, mutual aid funds, or personal businesses, buy in at $5 per month. Potential for income from items or services provided (including groups).
  • Participate at the $10 per month level if you wish unlimited (except by size of group) access to professionally-led issue support and educational groups, or if you want access to teach these groups and charge money for attendance (with a portion going to the server).
  • All members of the server are welcome to participate in the consensus governance of the server, with meetings held at least monthly and an ongoing forum in between.

In addition, my therapy participants and the direct therapy participants or current students of anyone offering to lead professionally-led groups get free memberships that include access to professionally-led groups.

Soup and Solidarity Mutual Aid Methods:

Like everything on page, this is subject to change via consensus governance and legal and financial advice. As of February 2025, here are initial plans:

  • 10% of money from mutual aid will be placed in savings until it is enough to invest in safe interest bearing securities. At that point, the funds will become a source of income for the efforts, eventually being developed into a charitable trust.
  • Until the server has reached a consensus on how to distribute funds, funds for mutual aid above that 10% will be distributed to existing mutual aid organizations in the United States.
  • The initial focus of the mutual aid will be people residing in the US and its territories. Consensus governance may eventually change this.
  • Initially, there will be no barriers to funds and no set categories for who is eligible other than residence in the US and territories. This, again, may change due to server consensus.
