Mutual Aid

Mutual Aid:

Welcome to the most activist part of the website! While I’ve been an advocate for mutual aid and solidarity with folks who live with marginalized identities whether I share those identities or not, I am now getting a bit more formal and focused about my efforts. Realistically, I’m no one’s idea of an organizer, but I have a lot of experience putting together resource lists from my days as a case manager. So I thought that collating a lot of the available information for people interested in jumping into mutual aid would be a good contribution.

What is Mutual Aid:

Decorative doodle of an anthropomorphic monster or animal caption "Mutual Aid."

Formally, mutual aid is “an organizational model where voluntary, collaborative exchanges of resources and services for common benefit take place amongst community members to overcome social, economic, and political barriers to meeting common needs” (Wikipedia, captured 12/8/2024). Informally, it is simply people helping people who are in the same boat as them. Its neighborliness. It’s an equal exchange of value between community members or a community coming together to support a member who is struggling. And it’s looking around to see what needs done, and doing it.

The organizations I’m linking to are resources both for people trying to get help and people offering help. Where possible (when I have time) I am corresponding with the organization listed to include information not offered on their web link. Some resources are organizations where mutual aid is already serving a community. Other links point to resources for how to set up your own organization.

As always, I am looking for more resources, so if you are an organizer for a mutual aid organization that provides services in the United States, please contact me to let me know about your organization and what you offer.

Connecting People:

I’m ready to set up a Discord server for people who are starting the process of creating aid organizations. In addition to assisting people in matching skills to organizations, I am willing to provide “help the helper” groups for mental health support and informal conflict resolution. Also, because building this website is a massive task, I will not start building the Discord until at least January of 2025, and am more likely to prioritize it if I get feedback encouraging me to.

Organizing the Mutual Aid Section:

Each organization gets its own page, and you can search the page using the “Mutual Aid”category. Each page will also use tags to show where it operates, what sort of services or products it offers, and other valuable searchable information. Again, I’m open to suggestions for ways to make it easier to find what you’re looking for.

A Couple of Notes About Organizations:

Finally, there isn’t enough mutual aid out there, so this page will include charities where services are needed and no mutual aid exists to help. In addition, not all organizations are a good fit for everyone seeking help. I will be tagging organizations to give people ideas of any issues with the service. Any service I’ve not been able to contact or confirm through reviews will be tagged with “unverified”
